Common technologies include catalytic bead, infrared, semiconductor, and laser-based detection. Each has limits. Catalytic sensors depend on sufficient oxygen and may be affected by poisons or inhibitors. Infrared sensors are suited to many hydrocarbons but do not detect every combustible gas. Semiconductor and laser methods also have application-specific response characteristics.
